Almost every site I audit looks fine in the report the previous developer sent. Then I open it on a three-year-old Android handset on mobile data and it takes eight seconds to show anything.
Both measurements are real. Only one of them matches your customers.
What to target
- First meaningful paint under 1.5 seconds on throttled 4G, so the visitor sees something real, not a blank screen.
- Largest Contentful Paint under 2.5 seconds, which is Google’s own threshold for "good".
- Interaction to Next Paint under 200 milliseconds, so taps feel immediate rather than laggy.
- Cumulative Layout Shift under 0.1, so nothing jumps as the page finishes loading.
- Total transferred weight under 1 MB for a content page. Most slow sites are just too heavy.
Where the weight usually is
In practice, four culprits account for the overwhelming majority of slow Indian small-business sites, in this order:
- 1Unoptimised images: a 4 MB hero photograph served at full resolution to a 360px-wide screen.
- 2Page-builder bloat: a theme plus fifteen plugins, each adding its own stylesheet and script to every page.
- 3Render-blocking fonts and scripts loading before any content can paint.
- 4Third-party tags: chat widgets, multiple analytics tools and ad pixels, each one a separate connection.
How to measure it honestly
Run Lighthouse in mobile mode with throttling on, then verify on a real handset on mobile data rather than office Wi-Fi. Lab tools tell you what to fix; a real device tells you whether you fixed it. Field data in Search Console tells you what your visitors got, which is the only number that counts in the end.
If it has not been tested on a mid-range phone on mobile data, it has not been tested.
Speed is not a separate project to be scheduled after launch. It is the consequence of decisions made while the site is being built, which is why hand-coded sites tend to pass these thresholds without a dedicated optimisation phase at all.
