How to get Google reviews (and why the bar keeps rising)

Reviews are the local ranking factor you control most directly and ask for least. A system that works, and the shortcuts that get profiles suspended.

How to get Google reviews (and why the bar keeps rising) | DivX Web Studio

Reviews are the strongest local signal most businesses never deliberately work on. Rankings in the map pack depend heavily on them, and so does whether anyone clicks you once you are there. A business with four reviews next to one with forty loses before the page finishes loading.

The threshold that reads as credible keeps climbing. What passed as established with ten reviews a few years ago now reads as new. Twenty-five is a more realistic floor today, and in competitive categories it is higher.

Why you have so few

Almost always one reason: nobody asks. Happy customers are not withholding reviews out of spite. They finished the transaction, moved on, and were never prompted at the one moment they felt positive about it.

The system

  1. 1Get your short review link. In the Google Business Profile dashboard, under "Ask for reviews", there is a short link that opens the review box directly. Use it. Sending someone to your profile and hoping they find the button loses most of them.
  2. 2Ask at the peak, not later. The right moment is immediately after the thing went well — the day of, or the day after. A week later the feeling has faded.
  3. 3Ask by the channel you already use. In India that is WhatsApp for most businesses. An email that will not be opened is not an ask.
  4. 4Ask personally, once. A message in your own words from a real person outperforms an automated sequence, and one ask that respects a no is better than three that do not.
  5. 5Make it easy to say no. "No problem at all if you would rather not" raises completion rather than lowering it, because it removes the pressure that makes people ignore the message.
  6. 6Reply to every single review. Google states that responding matters, and prospective customers read the replies to judge what you are like when something goes wrong.
  7. 7Keep it continuous. Thirty reviews in one week and none for a year reads worse than two a month forever. Freshness is part of the signal.

A message that works

Hi [name], really glad that went well. If you have a minute, would you mind leaving a quick Google review? It genuinely helps a small business get found. [link]. No worries at all if you would rather not.

Short, specific, a direct link, and an easy exit. That is the whole format.

Things that will cost you the profile

  • Buying reviews. Detection is better than people assume, and the penalty can be removal of every review you have, including the real ones.
  • Offering a discount or entry into a draw in exchange. Incentivised reviews are a policy violation whether or not the review is honest.
  • Asking staff, family or friends to review a business they have not used.
  • Review gating: asking how it went first and only sending the link to the people who say "good". Explicitly against Google policy.
  • Setting up a kiosk and collecting reviews from one IP address in an afternoon.

When you get a bad one

Reply, publicly, within a day, without arguing. Acknowledge the specific thing, say what you have changed, and offer to take it offline. You are not writing to that customer, who has already decided. You are writing to every prospective customer who will read it later.

A profile of exclusively five-star reviews reads as suspicious anyway. One honest three-star with a gracious reply does more for credibility than a flawless record.
